Staying Safe Online in Nigeria: The ThreatsAre Real and Here’s Exactly How to ProtectYourself

Nigerian internet users lose billions of naira to online scams, fraud, and
cybercrime every year. Fast internet means nothing if it leads you straight into a
scammer’s trap. Here’s how to stay safe

At Syscodes, we give you the fastest, most reliable fibre connection possible. But the internet is a big place and not all of it is friendly. The same connection that lets you stream your favourite show, work remotely, and video call family abroad can also expose you to real risks if you’re not careful. This guide is our way of making sure your online life is not just fast, but safe.

Your Essential Online Safety Checklist

Use Strong, Unique Passwords
Every account you own should have a different password. Use a password manager like Bitwarden (free) or 1Password to generate and store them. A strong password is at least 12 characters, mixing letters, numbers, and symbols. ‘Syscodes2026!’ is better than ‘password123’ but still not ideal let a password manager generate truly random ones

Turn On Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) Everywhere

Two-factor authentication adds a second layer of security beyond your password. Even if a scammer
gets your password, they can’t log into your account without your second factor. Enable it on your
email, social media, banking apps, and every important account. Google Authenticator and Microsoft
Authenticator are free apps that make this easy.

Keep All Your Software Updated

Software updates are not just about new features — they patch security vulnerabilities that hackers
actively exploit. When your phone, laptop, or app tells you an update is available, install it as soon as
you can. Outdated software is one of the primary ways malware enters devices.

Be Suspicious of Urgency

One of the most reliable signs of a scam is manufactured urgency. ‘Your account will be suspended
in 24 hours!’ ‘Act now or lose this offer forever!’ Legitimate organisations do not pressure you into
immediate action. When you feel rushed, slow down. Take your time. Verify independently before
doing anything.

Check Website Addresses Carefully

Scammers create fake websites that look identical to real ones but with slightly different addresses.
‘syscodescomms.com’ is our real website. ‘syscodecomms.com’ (missing an ‘s’) would be a fake.
Always check the full web address before entering any personal information, and make sure there’s a
padlock icon in your browser’s address bar.

Back Up Your Important Data

Back up your photos, documents, and important files to a physical hard drive or cloud storage
(Google Drive, iCloud, or Dropbox). If your device is ever infected with ransomware or stolen, your
data remains safe. A backup done weekly is a habit that can save you from enormous pain.

Report Cybercrime in Nigeria

If you fall victim to online fraud, report it immediately to the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission (EFCC) at efcc.gov.ng, or the Nigeria Police Force Cybercrime Unit. The more quickly
you report, the better the chances of recovery. You can also report to your bank directly to freeze
suspicious transactions.
